As a self-help organisation, the Federal Association of Families of People with Mental Illness (BApK) represents families with people with mental illness on a national level. The BApK sees its duties in
- influencing politics and legislation
- supporting and networking the activities of the state associations
- critically supporting developments in hospitals and psychiatry in the community
- informing and advising the social environment of people with mental illness; one way in which the BApK achieves this is by providing its "SeeleFon" telephone hotline
- organising conferences and seminars
- publishing informational material which provide families with people affected with practical help and objective information
- participating as the co-publisher of "Psychosoziale Umschau" and co-operator of the "Psychiatry Network"( www.psychiatrie.de )
